You can have an online presence for your small business, even if you don’t have any money to pay a WordPress designer or pay for hosting. Here are the basic steps to create a blog or website:
- Sign up for a free account with WordPress. Go here to start and you’ll see you have a choice to sign up for either a website theme or a blog theme. They are basically the same thing. The difference is, the website is set up to have a static homepage while the blogging theme is usually set up to have posts displayed on the homepage. If you change your mind, don’t worry. A static homepage can be switched to a posts homepage with the click of a button. And vice versa.
- Pick a theme. There are many themes to pick from but don’t fret too much if it feels daunting because there’s so much choice. It’s very easy to install a new theme at any point after you start your site. So when you’ve found a theme you like, select it. After you pick a theme, you be taken to the next option, which is to choose a domain. If you don’t want to spend any money here, your domain name will be yourcompanyname.wordpress.com. If you want to spend $25, you can have the more professional looking yourcompanyname.com. If you are experimenting with the whole idea, you can try the free route first and buy a domain name later.
- Once you find yourself in the WordPress admin area, you’re ready to create posts and build pages, etc. The black vertical bar is where you’ll find everything you need. To create static info about your small business (About, Contact, etc.), you’ll go to the Pages area and create a new page. To start blogging, you’ll go to the Posts area and create a new post.
- You many want to create a custom menu (under Appearances), if you have a larger company. And you may want to go to the widgets area (also under Appearances), if you want to add widgets such as Twitter feeds, links to previous posts, etc.
