I used to work for newspapers and still love the news – especially local news. My friend and I created Danforth East Online, a community news website, as a way to promote and bring more awareness to our little Danforth East neighbourhood in Toronto. We wanted to try to create a WordPress website that has small frequent posts about local news, people, businesses, events, etc.
We try to post fresh content often and it’s certainly helped with SEO (search engine optimization). Our name is slowly getting out into the community.
My partner and I write stories about neighborhood events, art openings, new businesses, local events, interesting people, real estate stories, anything of note to the community.
I created a child theme – I have experience with theme customization – working with the Cyberchimps Responsive theme, and added a few plugins like Jetpack, Google Analytics and the Spider Event Calendar. We have a Twitter feed on the site and have had fun trying to build a following.
I often use my husband’s photography for stories – fortunately, he loves to photograph local events.
